I love to do quick figure drawings; attacking the paper with
charcoal, drawing and smudging as I go. The figure eventually
emerges from the page of lines, shapes and rhythms, as does a record
of the energy and spontaneity involved in the drawing process. By
cutting up my drawings and piecing them back together into abstract
collages, I can incorporate the structure and organization of
grid-like compositions with the energy and rhythm of my gesture
drawings. These collages then become the starting point for bold
paintings, some still suggestive of the figure, some purely
abstract, and others even resembling landscapes

September 11, 2001 was a turning point in many ways for this
country, and for me as well. I was moved to pick up my paintbrush,
after 27 years of devoting myself to other pursuits, as a way to
express the images and emotions I had been carrying since that day.
